Macbeth
Background
Box Clever’s production of Macbeth is designed specifically to engage young audiences and students studying the text for their GCSEs, bridging classic literature with striking physical theatre, high-energy stage combat, and a darker, more visceral atmosphere.
As director Riad Richie notes, rather than simply remounting past shows, the creative team continually seeks ways to make the production punchier, spookier, and more relevant to contemporary students. The design philosophy embraces a modern, stylized, yet sinister aesthetic—utilizing sleek armoring, dark silhouettes, and rich symbolic textures to pull young viewers straight into the psychological chaos of ambition and guilt.

Conceptualization & Thematic Constraints
The core visual narrative centers on how Macbeth seizes the throne through regicide—his entire position and newfound power built directly upon the king's blood. Because this production tours secondary schools and educational venues where the use of liquid fake blood is strictly prohibited or impractical, the design turns to an alternative, highly theatrical medium: red embroidered diamonds, ruby gemstones, and dense crimson beadwork.
Character Development & Fabrication
Macbeth & Lady Macbeth:
The crown features jagged, metallic spikes reminiscent of barbed wire or thorns, encrusted with brilliant red crystals that catch the stage lighting, symbolizing sovereignty and the piercing weight of guilt.
Structured shoulder caps and sleek black undergarments combine high-fashion elements with tactical armoring, representing a militaristic rise to power.
Lady Macbeth’s garments are “stained” using intricate red beadwork and ruby-encrusted detailing, manifesting her descent into madness and the eternal "damned spot" without spilling a single drop of liquid.
The Witches:
Costumes incorporate long black tassels sewn onto structured dark garments, creating dramatic movement and a mysterious, shamanic sense during physical theatre sequences.
Oversized hooded cloaks with multi-meter drapes and sheer black mesh veil the performers, allowing them to shift fluidly between shadow and light as they manipulate the tragic fate of the characters.
Macduff:
Design utilizes metallic detailing and structured silhouettes to contrast the organic decay of Macbeth’s corrupt court with cold, sharp vengeance.
