Novelist Philo thought she was adapting her own book into a series. Instead, she finds
herself fighting to preserve it. Every line cut from her script becomes a new compromise —
until those “blacked-out blocks” are no longer deletions, but products. Her producer turns
redactions into a branding strategy, and soon, even rebellion is part of the pitch.
Set in a rehearsal room where language is currency and authority shifts with every scene,
Blacked-Out Blocks is a darkly funny, formally inventive piece that deconstructs the
theatre-making process in real time. As the script rewrites itself before the audience’s eyes,
the characters fall into spirals of meta-commentary, half-truths, and self-sabotage.
