Background

In A Clockwork Orange, the protagonist Alex was a gangster who had committed rape and murder. After being imprisoned, he voluntarily accepted "aversion therapy" in order to be released early. He fought against "evil" at its root, but became a puppet without the right to choose. He was used by the government, the opposition, the Minister of the Interior and other parties, and betrayal and deception ran through his experience. This made "me" think, if people do not have the right to make their own choices and are forced to accept the will of others, they are like robots mechanically completing their life "KPI", just like many people in society are forced to move forward without knowing the direction and meaning.

Design Process

1. Hat design and production
Analyzing the hat shape in movies and the history of European hats, we chose organza material after designing five versions. The initial sewing effect of fishbone was not good, so we used thin iron wire to fix the overall shape. The second state is a bowler hat that fits the hairline, with the hand bone elements on the top of the head implying "mental control", and the symbolic expression is achieved through material and structure adjustment.

2.Lower body decoration: sexual suggestion presentation
Referring to the sexual suggestion elements in the movie, the frame decoration in front of the hip is designed to metaphorically represent the reproductive organs. In the early stage, we tried fishbone production, but due to structural problems, we used metal wire welding frame to solve the problem of shape and sewing, and accurately conveyed the design intention through material iteration to strengthen the visual metaphor function.

3.Mask design: visualization of being controlled
Focusing on the "controlled" state, from iron chain decoration to ultra-light clay hand bones, using iron wire to blur the line of sight and red and black tones to create a dark feeling. Echoing the "brainwashing training" scene in the movie, the mask is transformed into an intuitive visual symbol of mental bondage through material and detail design.

4.Large plaster frame: a metaphor for behavioral restrictions
To simulate the state of "body confinement", the outline is drawn with plaster cloth and the frame is made by combining geometric structures. In view of the weight of plaster, a plastic board is first used to build the base and then plaster is pasted, finally forming an installation with both muscle texture and restraint, using physical restrictions to metaphorically represent the theme of "behavior being disciplined".

5.Color scheme: movie tone and retro fusion
The color scheme is inspired by movie screenshots, using retro linen and retro blood red with gold grids. The combination of the two not only echoes the dark tone of the movie, but also enhances the visual level through the texture of the material, achieving a balance between symbolic meaning and artistic expression.
