Background

They show a society that uses people for theirown needs e.g., the beautiful deer, slaughtered and displayed as an object ofdecoration, is a metaphor for Violetta and other women in a world where theirrole is to be glamorous for men. The red/white camellia and the whiteblood-stained dress show a society that seeks to look above reproach on the surfacebut which is actually sucking the blood out of people, and inVioletta's case, she is literally staining her clothes by coughing up blood.

"La Traviata" is a veryclassic and famous opera. The most important point in the entire opera concernsVioletta's illness. Tuberculosis was a very common disease among the wealthy ofthat era. I started thinking about modern times. What does such a disease mean?It could be covid-19, it could be something else. I studied a lot of "LaTraviata" operas and found that they were basically very classical instyle, so I came up with new ideas.

From her disease but metaphoricallysociety is sucking her blood - she has to return to the party world even thoughshe is still unwell. This drew us to the world of vampires as a metaphor for aninhuman, selfish and bloodsucking world, and one that happens at night and which is ostensibly glamorous.

Design Process

I would like to thank my director Elaine. I learned a lot during this collaboration, from how to design to better fit the script and story, to how to cleverly Controlling costs, reusing props and costumes, there are so many knowledge points to learn. When I was cooperating and chatting with the director, I enjoyed this project very much, and I was very happy. For example, many characters were placed in different eras and transformed in different ways. Many of her experiences and ideas inspired me. In the design of this opera, I learned more about the opera which style is like morden day, and noticed more details that I had never thought of. I am very lucky to have such cooperation with the director.
